Begin with a person and an identity.
我 是 学生 — wǒ shì xué shēng — means “I am a student.” Here, 是 connects the person 我 to the identity 学生. Arrange these three blocks in that order, then check the sentence.
This is one useful pattern, not a rule for every Chinese sentence. Use the explanation attached to each exercise to understand the pattern you are practising.
Add an activity to something you like.
我 喜欢 喝 茶 — wǒ xǐ huan hē chá — means “I like drinking tea.” 喜欢 comes before the activity 喝茶. Notice how the blocks represent words: 喜欢 stays together even though it has two characters.
In a guided exercise, tap words to place them in your sentence. Drag to reorder them, or use Tab and Enter to select a block and the arrow keys to move selected words. If you get stuck, open the hint before revealing the answer.
Move from guided answers to your own words.
Choose My word bank to explore without a fixed answer. Enter 我 喜欢 中文 with spaces to keep each word on its own block. Repeating a word creates another copy when your sentence needs it.
Free building does not automatically check grammar. It is a space to try word order, work through a lesson or discuss a sentence with a teacher. Guided exercises check the supported answers for their specific prompts.
Use colour as a supporting clue.
In guided exercises, colours identify a word’s role in that sentence rather than its correct position. Read the characters and meaning first; use the Block colours legend in Settings when you need it.
In your own bank, colours help distinguish blocks and do not label grammatical roles. Switch pinyin off when you want to test character recognition, then turn it back on to read the finished sentence aloud.

Can I practise without an account?
Yes. Guided sentence exercises and your local word bank are available without signing in.
Does free building correct my grammar?
No. Answer checking is available for guided exercises. Your own word bank is for open-ended practice.
Can I use blocks on a phone or with a keyboard?
Yes. Tap to add or return words, drag to reorder, or use Tab, Enter and arrow keys with a keyboard.
Can I use HSK vocabulary?
Yes. Open My word bank, then Settings and HSK lessons. Choose a standard, level and lesson to add words.
