A blank square shows the outer boundary of a Chinese character. Tian Zi Ge adds a horizontal and vertical centre line, giving learners reference points for the position of radicals, the height of strokes, and the space between components.
The lighter structure is useful when a plain square offers too little guidance but the diagonal lines of Mi Zi Ge are more detailed than the exercise requires.
